What a great way to end a cookoff!
The powerhouse team of Reva and Billy Bob Weatherly came to show us how it’s done at the 1st Annual Chili on the Guadalupe out in Boerne. Reva took 1st and Billy Bob got second, proving once again that Line Shack Chili can be mighty hard to beat.
Nothing former about either of these champions but some of their former wins are pretty impressive: Reva won first place at the Tolbert Ladies State Chili Championship back-to-back in 2008 and 2009; and Billy Bob is lifetime qualified because he won 1st Place Chili win Behind the Store in 2009. These folks are true ambassadors of chili and barbeque, always ready to help others out, share a beverage or tell a whopping good story. Now they’ve got a new one to tell.
Early on Saturday morning, after breakfast and coffee and before firing up their stoves, Billy Bob had gone into his motor home for some reason and found himself locked in. No amount of banging on the door, or trying to pick the lock helped. Keys didn’t work either. Frozen in the locked position, the lock had to be broken in order to open the door. Ouch! Reva said at one point during the knob wriggling and door banging she really wanted her drink refreshed, but due to Billy Bob’s aggravation level she resisted the urge to ask him for window service and waited for the lock demolition to be complete before refilling her glass. Smart gal!
We’d like to extend a hearty CTTCG Welcome! to Cynthia Whittenburg of San Antonio who has ventured over from "the dark side" to see what the Central Texas Tolbert Chili Group is all about. Jack Potter’s niece Cassidy Harrison has been out to several of the cookoffs in recent months, and Chili on the Guadalupe was her first time to cook competition chili. We do hope that we’ve hooked ‘em both, and that we’ll see these ladies stirring another pot of red with us again real soon.
The Boerne Volunteer Fire Department couldn’t make it to the event so there was no silent auction. No live auction either, but there was a 50/50 drawing and the lucky ticket-holder was Susie Higgins. Splitting the pot, she took home a tidy wad of cash totaling $144.
Practical jokes run amuck
Friday evening "someone" duct taped Ron Faulstich in the port-a-potty. Much laughter ensued, Ron perhaps the loudest. Saturday afternoon with the temperature hovering at a mere

101, one of his alleged tormentors Dyanna Matthews found herself trapped inside the steaming blue box by a golf cart carefully and precisely parked by Terry Wright. Enlisted by Ron, Terry looked pleased to be a participant. Poor Dyanna - after enduring the bang-up job of a drum solo Ron beat out on the side of the box, she was a bright pink when she finally gained exit. Is this the end of it? Maybe...maybe not.
Thank you Bill & Deba Center for hosting this great cookoff. You did a great job! The site is perfect, preparations were well thought out, and it looked like you’d been doing it for years. The pot luck dinner Friday night featured a mountain of chicken grilled to perfection by #1 son Massie, and the many, many side dishes contributed by so many of the cooks were scrumptious! Daughter Nikki stayed close to her mother and was general all-purpose gopher. #2 Son, RJ on top of his roving photographer duties has forever won our hearts by being the Cabana Boy who was in and out of the river with pitchers of Margaritas (thank you Ron Faulstich for the machine and Dwight Hamilton for the really, really good tequila used to make ‘em!). This family really knows how to host a chili cookoff, are great supporters of the CTTCG, and quite simply They Rock!
Did you notice the words "1st Annual," were used in naming this event? That’s right - by popular demand there will be a 2nd Annual Chili on the Guadalupe just about the same weekend next June! Hooray!
