Tolbert Men's State Maxdale 3/05/2011

MAXDALE, TX Just as the weekend was about to start, the cold front blew in. It brought cold night-time temperatures and frozen pipes in the mornings, but the days warmed up nicely - even if it got a little wet on Saturday. No matter - a good time was had by all, and plans are already in the works for next year's event.
On Friday night, Ted Hume of Dallas won the Beer Off for the second year in a row. There were 24 entries this year, and nobody got drunk

On Saturday there were 34 gentleman cooks participating in the 2011 Tolbert Men's State Chili Championship. Top place went to Jimmy Smith of Harker Heights. Yep, the same fella that runs the barbeque events on Friday out in Terlingua. Congratulations Dude! Full stats are posted below. Jimmy was also the lucky recipient of a crisp $50, courtesy of Republic Tequila because of a prominently displayed bottle in his cooking area.

Long-time friend of the chili world, Casey McBrine from Meridian stopped by with guitar in hand. With a roaring fire in the chili park's meeting room, Casey entertained an appreciative audience with his beautiful ballad, "Windows in the Fire." The song was inspired by one of the great old-timers, Camp Master of Luckenbach, Troy King. Many years ago, mesmerized by the campfire, Troy had shared his fantasy vision of tiny windows deep within the burning embers. Casey's song is a beautiful tribute to both the man and his fantasy. Jack Potter helped out by turning off the lights dramatically driving home the message of the song. Good stuff.
